I love to visit this site and read all the great stories and "...lives since Cadets." I just want to update my E-Address("cmollnow741@attbi.com") and say that Your Efforts Errol to get this Aviation Cadet Museum started and into reality is just spectacular. Your drive to get this done has not dwindled - the same drive that got you thru Cadets and your life. "You have done a fantastic job. And a thanks to your wife for her great support, efforts and help." You are certainly "a leader of our Breed." Carl J. Mollnow 61-F Spence/Vance

Great site... can't believe it took this long for someone to let me know about it. (Haven't seen it published in AF Times or any of the aviation magazines.) Was in Class 57-U (Stallings T-34, T-28, and Bryan T-33. Then on to F-84 and F-100. England, Germany, IP at Moody, Thailand, IP at Laredo, Vietnam, IP at Perrin, IG at Randolph. (My one claim to fame is most figher combat missions in Vietnam in one year. Test group of A-37... now contact person for A-37 Association. ) Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me and would like to be put on the list for any reunions of 57-U or "All Cadet" reunions. (Didn't know about the recent one in San Antonio and live only 50 miles from there.)

Friday, 30 NOV 01, Bob Brees 57R/S Must be getting old. Got my medicare card this month and started to reminisce. Found this site and a couple of old friends and acquaintances. T-34, T-28 and back to the Guard at Ontario, Ca for F-86s. Started at UAL in 61 but they had too many after the Capitol Airlines merger so about 100 of us went looking for other jobs in Sept. 61. Found a home at Western Airlines and retired from Delta in '96 after the merger. Bought a PA-18 "Super Cruiser" to really learn to fly and now enjoy boating up the inland passage in Canada. Glad to find the site. bobpuget@aol.com (Bob Brees)

59-G, Lackland at San Antonio, Graham at Marianna. Hello all aviators. This is a great site to meet at. I was the only black cadet in my class. Flew the T-34 and T-28. Got lost on my first night navigation from Graham to Montgomery, Al to Tallahassee, Fla and return to Graham, only I went to Thomasville, Ga instead of Tallahassee. An instructor found me and led me back. Washed out with an inner-ear problem. My room mate was Harry Solden from Memphis, other cadets in my barracks were Robert Wolfe from NY, I think, and Mel Reese from Texas. Mr. Slocomb was my instructor. Earned commission in OTS and served 24 years in AF as an intelligence officer. There were only 2 of us from 59-G at the outstanding all-aviation-cadet-classes reunion in San Antonio in about 1997. Best regards to all aviators and lovers of flight.

Hello, I noticed on your web site you had a place for comments/requests I thought maybe a few of the people here may be able to help. I am in the process of restoring a BT-13A Vultee Valiant. I have the following information on the plane, but would like to see if anyone out there has pictures, information or would allow me to call them to talk about this plane and the possible group this plane was in. It is Serial # 41-10989 (2960), it was received on Feb. 14, 1942 and was initially assigned to the AAF Basic Flying School, Gunter AAF, Montgomery AL. It went to the AAF Basic Flying School, Sumpter AAF, SC on Feb. 28, 1942. It remained there until Jul. 18, 1944, when it was placed in storage at Warner Robins Air Depot GA. It was disposed as surplus on Oct. 12, 1944 at Ponca City, OK. It was modified for civilian use and given a N-number of N-4566V and serial number of 2960. Any help would greatly be appreciated in this restoration. Thanks, Matt Cutter ACEFiero@Compuserve.com 970-259-4156

I am researching U.S. citizens who enlisted in the RCAF prior to Pearl Harbor. Over 8800 U.S. citizens enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Some 5000 remained in the RCAF until war's end. Over 800 were killed while serving in an RCAF uniform. U.S. citizens who enlisted in the RCAF include Don Blakeslee and X-1 test pilot Chalmers "Slick" Goodlin. Apparently, Don Gentile enlisted in the RCAF, although I have not located any records to support this claim. I would like to hear from anyone who would have names, photographs and/or other related information about Americans who enlisted/trained/served with the RCAF during WWII.

PHOTOS OF FAIRCHILD PT-19 #711 WANTED!!!! I am just beginning to restore Fairchild PT-19A AAF Serial 42-2879 to flying condition. It served both at Cimarron Field, Yukon, Oklahoma and Mustang Field, El Reno, Oklahoma during the war. After months of research, I have determined with almost 100% certainty that my aircraft carried the field number 711 on the nose, fuselage, and tail while at Cimarron Field. My goal is to paint the aircraft exactly as it appeared at Cimarron. I am searching for any photograph of a PT-19 carrying the number 711, even if you don't think the photo was taken in Oklahoma. I am also interested even if the photo shows only a portion of the aircraft. I am also looking for any materials including photographs, cadet yearbooks, post cards, or any other information on these two bases. My aircraft arrived at Cimarron on 6/16/42. In conjunction with my restoration project, I am also going to write a book on the two fields. I would be very interested in hearing from all veterans of Cimarron and Mustang. Thank you very much for your help. Mark Howard Edmond, Oklahoma

Hello, I'm looking for foto's of a F-84F Thunderstreak that has flown by the Thunderbirds. I have some foto's but this F-84F has been re-painted. The body and wings are not silver but sort of gray. And is the someone who can tell me what color numbers are used? I'm building a RC model of the F-84F in scale 1 to 5 for the World Jet Master in Thailand in november this year. Great reading all the comments. Not too much from the 40's. I was in class 44E. Enlisted in reserves while in College at Shippensburg PA. Enlisted and stay in school... Called up and went to Miami Beach for Basic Training. Akron University for CTD and then to Santa Anna CA for pre flight and classification. King City CA for primary, Lamoure CA for basic, Fort Sumner NM for twin engine advanced. Austin TX, troop carrier, sent to Malden MO. Just closed as a primary training field and was reopening as a C-47 transition base. 60th Troop Carrier in Italy. Operation Green Project at Belem Brazil. Married while in Malden to a YL from Kennett MO. Out in 45 back to college. Taught in one room school, 1st thru 8th grades, for three years. Returned to SE Missouri in summer of 1951 and learned that Malden was reopening as a primary flight school. Applied for position as instructor and was hired. 1st class of flight instructors were already in TX in school and talked me into teaching in the ground school with the option of a transfer to the flight line at a later date. Liked the ground school and taught there until the imminent closing of the base and I moved back to PA in 1959. Retired from teaching in 1980 from the York PA city schools. Anyone out there that remembers me??? Please email me. Thank You John K3KMC

I'm so very proud to be associated in any way, with such a unique, and distinguished group, of people, as those fellow aircraft enthusiasts, and especially those who served in the Viet Nam war. I am just beginning to restore Fairchild PT-19A AAF Serial 42-2879 to flying condition. It served both at Cimarron Field, Yukon, Oklahoma and Mustang Field, El Reno, Oklahoma during the war. I am looking for any materials including photographs, cadet yearbooks, post cards, or any other information on these two bases. My main goal is to identify its exact markings during the war so that I can authentically reproduce the paint scheme. I have just verified with almost 100% certainty that the aircraft was blue and yellow instead of all silver when it arrived at Cimarron, but I still have not determined the large numbers painted on the nose, fuselage, and tail (field number). The aircraft was probably painted silver later at Cimarron or after it was transferred to Mustang Field. My aircraft arrived at Cimarron on 6/16/42. After a couple of months of research, I am reasonably certain that the aircraft carried a number greater than 704 but less than 716. If you have photos of any military PT-19 carrying a field number between those numbers, please send me a scan of it. In conjunction with my restoration project, I am also going to write a book on the two fields. I would be very interested in hearing from all veterans of Cimarron and Mustang. Thank you very much for your help. Mark Howard Edmond, Oklahoma

NAVCAD Pre-flight Class 46-52. Was learning formation flying at Saufley Field when the Korean War was folded. I thought it over for a couple of weeks, then took a DOR to get back to my civilian career in journalism. More than a decade later, covering the Sam Sheppard appeal at the Supreme Court, I realized that F. Lee Bailey, the defense counsel, had been cadet commander of my battalion. Have often wondered what became of classmates who stayed in the program. I know what became of Saufley. It's now a minimum security federal prison, but the Navy still uses the runways.

My hobby, since the late 1960's, is the USAF and I try to collect the Squadron and Wing patches both Fighter and Recce related. However, it is almost impossible to do this without any help, so if you think that you can help me please please e-mail me. Thanks, Peter

For the last 8 years, I have been researching and documenting all military aviation crash sites in Arizona from WWII-1980's. I would be interesed in talking with anyone who was involved in, or has information of such. I have been to approx. 105 crash sites here and feel that I am just touching the tip of the iceberg as Arizona was a major USAAF/USAF training hub through the years. Visit my site at- http://members.aol.com/ariztrey/crash1.htm Anyone who has photos or information, please contact me. (602) 952-7098, Trey Brandt

My brother, Lt. Paul Hudson Arnold graduated in the class of 43D at Altus, OK. He was an instructor on a B-26 for a year, training crews to go overseas. He was unmarried and asked to go overseas so a married man would not have to go. He was on one of his last training flights from Lake Charles, LA to Miami, FL. He left Miami with instructions to radio the tower every 30 minutes, but was never heard from. His plane was never found. The search continued longer than normal, but the report to us was that there was no oil slick, life raft or other evidence of a crash. I was 13 at the time, and Paul was my father figure, since our father had died when I was six and Paul was eight. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may have had contact with Paul. Looking for anyone from my dad's (Richard W. Burch, Bonita, CA) aviation cadet class at Cal-Aero; I believe it was 42-D. He then went to Victorville Army Flying School for his twin engine training. He was with the 28thComposityeGrp./73rdSQd in the Aleutians May to August 1943 as a B-25 pilot. And finally in Bassingbourn, England with the 91stBG/324thSQD, where he was KIA 6-20-44 while piloting a B-17 during a bomb run over Hamburg. I've been trying to get information on his primary and basic training at Cal-Aero: any suggestions? Thank you, Louise.

Jay is buried at the American Military Cemetery at Maddingley, Cambridge. 'Crosswind' has pictures inside of all the Aviation Cadets of "E" Flight, "F" Flight, "G" Flight and "H" Flight. Flight Instructors, and Commanding Officers. I would be happy to scan these Flight classes if anyone would like copies.

Hello to all ex A.C. Cadets out there, I was in Class 43K, although it would have been 43H if not for measles at Nashville Classification Center. I came from Oakland CA. and was inducted at the Presidio at Monterey Feb 8th 1943 arriving at Nashville Mar 26th. Our Class of 43K arrived at Maxwell Field AL. in early May 43, and was the last class that was hazed per the old Cadet System, we were not allowed to haze our underclassmen. While there I was in Squadron "K" and my roommate was an Edward Ralph from Jamaca L.I. he was a third year transferee from the Coast Guard Academy. From Maxwell my group went to the Southern Airways Training School in Decatur AL. flying PT 17 Aircraft. Because it was an Army "contract" school the instructor pilots were transferred to Englin in FL. and because we flew alphabetically, I flew last, and because the weather in No. Alabama in July, clouded up in the afternoon, I fell behind, and washed out. Also I do remember the name of my instructor "Cleveland C. Currier" he disliked Californians, so I washed after 20hrs 46min and went to Keesler Field Miss. Thence Sioux Falls Radio School, Yuma AR. for gunnery and endeng up at Muroc Air Field (now Edwards AFB). One of my friends John Mehner from San Francisco, graduated B-17's at Dalhart TX. and went to Europe, I lost touch with him. Also I was friends with a Harold Rouse and William Schmandel from Wasco/Taft CA. Later I read that in June 1942 the General Staff met and set the goals for the invasion at 120,000 (Pilots Navigators Bombardiers) in June 1943 they met again and reduced that figure to 80,000, thus the drastic reduction in school closings and the resulting washouts. I was very bitter at the time but when reaching Muroc and having my pass town in Hollywood, with silver wings, and lotsa chic's, who could complain ??? Anyway Greetings to all. Norm

CLASS 58-02 DD (HARLINGEN BY THE SEA). STARTED PREFLIGHT AT LACKLAND ON 24 SEPT 56, AND GRADUATED FROM PBOC (THATS PRIMARY BASIC OBSERVER CORPS TO YOU PILOT TYPES!) ON 28 JAN 58. WENT TO WACO FOR SIX DELIGHTFUL MONTHS OF R.O. SCHOOL, AND FROM THERE IT WAS ON TO OTIS AFB AND THE 58TH. F.I.S. THE SQUADRON WAS MOVED TO WALKER AFB IN THE SUMMER OF 59, AND WE NEVER GOT AN ACTIVE AIR SCRAMBLE FROM THAT POINT ON! IMPOSSIBLE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE THREAT WAS DOWN THERE IN NEW MEXICO, BUT THE LIVING WAS EASY AND THE FLYING WAS FUN. THE SQUADRON WAS DE-ACTIVATED IN OCTOBER 1960, AND WE SCATTERED TO THE 4 WINDS, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN. AS I HAD A DOS, THEY GAVE ME AN EARLY OUT. THE CADET PROGRAM WAS A TRULY UNIQUE, THRILLING EXPERIENCE, TOUR RAMP NOTWITHSTANDING!

I apologize for not being able to attend the reunion! Maybe next time. I do wonder if anyone from Class 57-P registered their attendance. If you have a video of the activities, please advise what it would take to own one. Our internet provider has been changed since I previously sent you e-mail messages looking for some of the Av-Cads from that class. As of yet I haven't seen any responses from any of those guys. I am only sure of one other at this time. Ralph Neely and he now resides in Figi. I have not found any information that indicates the success of the recent reunion so if you can I would appreciate your sharing that with me and/or others who may be interested. Thanks for the work you are doing. Jim Smith

Hi Errol: Your nice message has been received and I have viewed whatever I could find on the several listed sites. No names "rang a bell" but there are a few "old timers" as "cadets from the early 1940s. I spent 1943 as an AF primary instructor, as you already know, at Lakeland, Florida. "Skipped over" being an Aviation Cadet (as I probably would have "washed out". Entered active service in the Ferry Command as a "Service Pilot" with a "bottom of the barrel rank as a Flight Officer. Flew the Hump 72 round trips in C-109s and C-54s haudling 100 Octane gas for the B-29s based in central China. Changed to "Military Wings" amd moved on way up to 2nd Lt. Fine group AVCadets. Best wishes!

Aviation Cadets Class 44-I. My 44-I group graduated at Foster Field, Texas, near Victoria, Texas. At my website there are some photographs and names of my fellow-cadets at the Oklahoma A&M College CTD and at Primary Pilot Training at Chickasha, Oklahoma; plus a few from Foster Field and beyond (with commentary). The website URL is http://www.angelfire.com/nh/anomalite. I've heard that we are now vanishing at the rate of about a thousand of us every day. I'm sure some of you are still here, and I hope you'll come visit with me. God bless you all, wherever you now may be. ::::::: John Christian

You guys put something back into the Cadet Program if,you can, to help the Museum idea take hold, remember no gift is too small [or too large]. Many of us have enjoyed a good standard of living having been Aviation Cadets. Errol Severe and his wife have dedicated themselves to make it happen. The Branson, MO, Aviation Cadet International Convention was a great time for all, thanks to Errol and Beth. Our sincere appreciation, Jim Salzmann 58C DAL retired.

Class 53 E, Bartow-Foster-Nellis. Korea ended before we graduated from Nellis. I wound up in the Eastern Air Defence, F-94c, F-89D., Otis AFB. Mass. Joined United Air Lines August 1956-retired Dec. 31, 1989 flying DC-10-30 ORD-HNL. It was great to be able to fly to age 60. I get to make a landing once in a while now with my son-in-law in C-152. After yrs. of search I found Retired Col. Tom Cavanaugh(Viet. F-105-F-104 Wild Weasel) We visited him several years, during our travels, before we found out he & wife were killed in auto accident. Found Air Guard Maj, John Brill in Indianapolis, IN. Retired USAF Bert Rhoten, West Point, UT. F-106 Iceland, F-111. We have met several times in Ogden for lunch. Retired USAF Don Downen in Burlington, CO. Hope to visit him next spring on our way home. I met retired USAF Lt.Gen. Robert Tanguy(53-E) in my home town of all places. He gave the key-note address at the dedication of Memorials to all of the vets from the area. A couple others, in Florida I can't recall right now. We would welcome contacts from any classmate or any info on one of same. How about a reunion for 53-Easy !!!!!! We are in our RV in Phoenix now so please use our e-mail. The F-16's, out of Luke AFB, overhead are music to my ears. God will add to the blessings to anyone who served his country honorably.

Started out as Class 57Q but the entire class was held up at Hondo AB to allow class of 57R to join us. That ment we had a couple of weeks of free flying and it was fun. Graduated July 30, 1957 at Reese AFB, Lubbock TX. Went on to Donldson AFB, Greenville SC and flew OLE SHAKKY around the world until May of 1960. Joined the airlines, first Ozark for one year and then to Western Airlines which eventually merged with Delta. Flew my last flight fron Honolulu in an L-1011 on Jan 4th, 1996, turned 60 on Jan 6th,'96 and have not had a day off since. Stopped at Hondo AB a couple of years back and did some enjoyable reminiscing. Looking forward to Branson just hope to see some familiar faces.

Have just returned from the Bainbridge Air Base/Southern Airways reunion in Bainbridge. Most in attendance were permanent party but many students were present. We had 7 Cadets and one student officer from 60-E in attendance. Very enjoyable experience. This reunion is usually held every two years but next year there will be a 50th anniversary reunion (base opened in 1951). Great site! I was part of the Class 57U at Bainbridge, which was held over; then graduated as Class 57V at Greenville. Flew F86D/L; GCI; T-33s/T-38s at Craig; ATC Hqs; AAC; F4s at Ubon; Vance T-38s; ATC Hqs where I retired in March '80. I would really like to hear from some classmates!! Aviation Cadets was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I never would have made it through---if I hadn't laughed so darn hard. It was great! I'd do it again, if they had a course for geriatrics!

I took the oath in Chicago on Apr.18, 1942. Remember the Doolittle Raid? Got private's pay until Aug. 1942 when we shipped out to Nashville, Tenn. for Classification. An overnite train ride sitting up in 50 yr. old day coaches. After couple of weeks we spent 2 or 3 days en route to San Antonio, SAACC. We arrived just after Labor Day and the hurricane that blew down Tent City. I started in 43-e but was hospitalized and left with 43-f. Went to Parks Air College, E St Louis for Primary(PT-19s), Independence Kansas, Basic(BT-14S from Randolph--all the instructors & check pilots--and were they unhappy with Kansas in Feb. 1943)And they took it out on us! Then to Moore Fld. on the Rio Grand--Those palm trees sure looked good after Kansas.

Standing by to connect with my fine classmates of 60-06N April-June '59. Although I "washed out" on a medical ("failed 'Red Lens' Test"), I remember our comraderie and mutual esteem. I returned to Auburn University, completed college and was commissioned through AFROTC. I completed UNT at JCAFB and flew almost 13,000 hours in MATS/MAC C124s, C141s, C5s, and C130s. I stayed on board (Active and Reserve) 33 years. I love you, my brothers!

Class 58-A/B, Stallings, Reese. Flew C-124 and C-133 out of Dover thru 1961. Avionics Officer at Dover thru 1963. I have been a civilian since then, owned 9 private aircraft over the years including Navion, Twin Commanche, Turbo Arrow. The rigid training beat into me by my instructor (Hollis Moore) at Stallings, saved my neck a few times. I hope to see a few of my classmates sign in here.

Base Flight C-47 instructor at Plattsburgh then, in 1969, transferred to Reserve C-124 at Stewart and Westover. PA ANG for O-2s and DASC operations. Enough points for retired pay at age 60 by 1977, so went to Saudi Arabia as Flight Crew Instsructor for five years, then to California to work on the B-1B as a System Safety Engineer. Retired after 10 yrs and returned to NY to enjoy my "Golden Years". Not all that golden; recovering from several operations but on the plus side, I survived them. I could tell David Letterman stories! Can't come to reunion because of the above but enjoy the web-site and maybe I can make the next one. Aim high and stay Healthy!

Class 56: graduated preflight Lackland just in time for Christmas leave in 1954. Then to nav school at Harlingen. Departed by SIE later to go back to college but never will forget the T-29 experience, the cardboard sandwiches in the box lunches and "going to college in jail" at Harlingen. We had to vacate one of our barracks for ROTC people in the summer. Anybody from this class out there? Anybody from this class out there ?

Class 61-05N at Harlingen. Graduated 21 Mar 61. KB-50J's at Biggs AFB until they all went to the bone yard at DM. Feb 65 to Aug 65 at "Bootstrap" UNO. Then C-130's with the 50th TCS at Sewart AFB for 6 months. Unit move to CCK, Taiwan until Feb 67. Then 37th TCS at Langley until May 69. Then I got a big break and landed a job as the Exchange Navigator with Canadian 435 Sq. at CFB Edmondton in Alberta, Canada. Best 3 1/2 years in my 22 year career. From Canada I went to Little Rock AFB where I retired in Sep 76. Moved to Fayetteville AR, to be close to the University so I could upgrade my degree but the loan officer at the bank that I went to for a loan to buy a house decided he wanted me on the staff. Never did get back to school. Bank went out of business and I stayed on with the building which is now called E. J. Ball Plaza vs First Place.

Glad to find this site! But...... Where are all the GOONS from the '55 -'56 Reese AFB Pre-Cadet Detachment and/or the '57 Papa Troops? We did Lackland, Bainbridge and Reese till June 1957. A few of us went on to Helicopters at Randolph, and even fewer became Instructors in those wondrous flying machines! Some of us even got to go to Goose....anyone remember? 'Even those who don't finish are AVCADS forever'--as the man wrote. I'm one of them. 61-07ND-2, washed back to 61-08NA-3 since I had more gigs to march than my class had time to graduate. SIE'd in Dec 60 to follow my muse-music; Forbes AFB as "education specialist"? ; seperated Jun 62. Six months later, appeared on 'Tonight Show' singing with Mama Cass. Never looked back except for a teeny, tiny thought that stays with me. What If I'd stayed!! Each of us marches to his own drummer. It was an honor for me to march, for a brief moment in my life, with other Aviation Cadets.

To all my classmates of 58-J, you will remember me as "Howdy Doody". For the last 40+ years I've reverted to my childhood nickname of "Gene". I cannot say enough about my hero's of Aviation Cadet Class 58-I/J. They all were a great inspiration to me. My sincere thanks goes out to the guys who have initiated this web site to keep alive the memory of the "Aviation Cadet Corp". Gene "Howdy Doody" Trotter, 58-J
